Programme overview

The Department of Life Science at RNTU offers a research-intensive Ph.D. programme in biotechnology under the guidelines prescribed by the University Grant Commission (UGC). The scholars, researchers, and guides of biotechnology are engaged in research in diverse research areas of fundamental and applied biology like plant biotechnology, molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, applied microbiology, biofertilizers, biocontrol, and the environment. In this programme, after successful completion of pre-Ph.D. course work, the scholar needs to choose the research topic and submit their thesis at the end of the programme. Promotion of the Indian biotechnology sector is high on the policy agenda of the Government of India. Biotechnology has also been recognised as one of the key priority sectors under the ‘Make in India’, ‘Skill India, and ‘Startup India’ initiatives of the Government of India, as it is one of the sectors expected to contribute towards enterprise creation, innovation, and economic growth.
